RAW — June 2024
“RAW” was an immersive exhibition by Chris Joubert that explored material, process, and presence at their most unrefined and immediate. Created entirely on drop cloths, the work stripped painting down to its essential elements—raw surfaces, direct application, and an uncompromising physicality.
Using drywall knives and straight-from-the-tube pigment, Joubert built dense, tactile surfaces defined by heavy layering, bold movement, and thick accumulations of paint. The resulting works were primitive and powerful, unpolished yet deliberate, capturing a sense of urgency and instinct rarely preserved in finished pieces.
The exhibition extended beyond painting into a fully realized environment. Every element within the space was designed and fabricated by the artist, including steel tables, wooden benches, iron aisles, custom lighting, and chandeliers. The work existed not only on the walls, but throughout the room, blurring the line between artwork, structure, and atmosphere.
Hosted at Love Dance Houston, a studio Joubert helped design and build, the exhibition reflected a broader creative practice that integrates fine art, fabrication, and spatial design. From the furniture to the lighting and sound system, each component contributed to a cohesive, immersive experience.
